In the dead of winter, in late afternoon light, I was struck by the incredibly long shadows, spanning miles. The light at the horizon was still bright while the foreground was dark and mysterious. My eyes tried to focus simultaneously on the bright and dark areas, while my brain attempted to synthesize the two, all the while discovering a hidden canyon within the shadows.
